The ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships® 2024 includes four disciplines, namely Junior Men, Junior Women, Junior Pairs, and Junior Ice Dance:

Junior Men/Women Singles

    (2) Free Skating: The program shall be skated in harmony with the music chosen by the competitors complete their program consisting of jumps, spins, steps, and other linking movements within 3 minutes 30 seconds (±10 seconds)

The Singles is a unique and compelling artistic sport of figure skating. Skaters perform alone on the ice, presenting their techniques, power, and creative expressions to captivate the spectators. Many skaters left their legacy with their exquisite skating skills and remarkable performance. The skaters must complete high-level jumps, spins, and steps with little flaws on the ice while maintaining their stamina and balance. The Singles is a core discipline that represents the essence and pinnacle of figure skating. Skaters strive for perfection and breakthrough through diligence and perseverance. The Singles often thrill audiences and are full of surprises and emotions.

Junior Pairs

A man and women skate in pair with close coordination and harmony for this event. Apart from the required elements in Singles, Pairs includes typical moves such as lifts, twist lifts, pair spins, spirals, throw jumps, etc.

  1. Age: Women must be between 13 and 19 years old before July 1 preceding the championships. Men must be between 13 and 21 years old before July 1 preceding championships.
  2. Competition Format: Short Program followed by Free Skating.
    (1) Short Program: The program shall be skated in harmony with the music chosen by the competitors who shall complete a paired program with required elements within 2 minutes 40 seconds (±10 seconds).

    (2) Free Skating: The program shall be skated in harmony with the music chosen by the competitors who shall complete a paired program with required features from single events and typical pair skating elements within 3 minutes 30 seconds (±10 seconds). Skaters also must coordinate their actions with the music.

The Pairs is a fascinating art comprising elements such as throw jumps and spirals that must be executed by both skaters, making it challenging. This event interprets the essence of cooperation as it requires close coordination and tacit understanding, which can only be achieved through due diligence and intense training. Pairs accentuates technique and strength, making the performance alluring and dramatic. It is often presented as a romantic story or dramatic plot with grace and elegance, resonating with spectators’ sentiments.

Junior Ice Dance

An Ice Dance team consists of one woman and one man. Differing from the Pairs, the Ice Dance emphasizes dance steps and underscores music interpretation through elements. In the 2023/24 season the couple must choose the music for the Rhythm Dance in accordance with the prescribed theme of the era of the 80’s, while in the Free Dance, the skaters choose the music without any specific theme. There are also strict limitations on the technical movements. Similar to Pairs two skaters perform together, but for example Ice Dance couples are not allowed to perform jumps with more than one revolution and only can perform certain dance lifts. Instead, Ice Dance couples aim to perform a dance on ice while linking specific dance elements together with creative body movements and complex footwork.

  1. Age: Women must be between 13 and 19 years old before July 1 preceding the championships. Men must be between 13 and 21 years old before July 1 preceding the championships.
  2. Competition Format: Rhythm Dance followed by Free Dance.

    (1) Rhythm Dance: The program shall be skated in harmony with the music chosen by the competitors who shall complete dance steps and patterns within 2 minutes and 50 seconds (±10 seconds). The patterns must include two predetermined pattern dances announced by the ISU.

    (2) Free Dance: The program shall be skated in harmony with the music chosen by the competitors who shall complete arranged dance steps, lifts, twizzles, spins, lifts, etc., within 3 minutes 30 seconds (±10 seconds).

Ice Dance accentuates dance skills and artistic expression comparing to the Singles and Pairs. Skaters must perform delicate and stylish movements while focusing on musical expression and emotions. Ice Dance movements have more steps, turns, and coordinated dance sequences, unlike Pairs with complex throw jumps or lifts. Ice Dance highlights the interaction and accord between skaters holding each other closely to perform subtle and smooth dance patterns. Ice Dance programs incorporate rich emotions and plots, allowing the spectators to feel the profound bond between skaters.

To conclude, Pairs emphasizes technique and power to attract the spectators through elegant movements and dramatic performances. In contrast, the Ice Dance accentuates dance skills and artistic expression and touches the spectators’ hearts through meticulous actions and rich emotions. The uniqueness of both disciplines demonstrates the diversity and richness of figure skating.

The spectators can experience these fascinating performances during the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships® 2024.
