Mao Shimada took the figure skating scene by storm.

Once she started to compete at the ISU Junior Grand Prix in fall 2022, she won every international event she entered and she is the 2024 Youth Olympic Games Champion, the 2023 World Junior Champion and a two-time ISU Junior GP Final Champion by now.

Mao was named after legendary Japanese skater Mao Asada, a three-time ISU World Champion and the 2010 Olympic silver medalist, and she followed right into the footsteps of her idol. The “new Mao” started skating for fun at an amusement park and fell in love with the sport right away. She has mastered the triple Axel and the quadruple toeloop, but is also known as an excellent spinner. You might not expect it, but Mao just loves roller coasters – the crazier, the better. The 15-year-old has the complete package and comes as the top favorite to Taipei City aiming to win her second consecutive Junior World title.
